MOUNTAIN

2017

A cinematic and musical exploration of humanity’s enduring fascination with mountains.

Only three centuries ago, climbing a mountain would have been considered close to lunacy. Peaks were places of danger, not beauty, and wild landscapes were feared rather than sought out. Why, then, are millions of us now drawn to the world’s highest places?

In a collaboration between director Jennifer Peedom and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Mountain explores the spellbinding power of high places and their capacity to shape our lives, ambitions and dreams. Combining extraordinary cinematography from some of the world’s most remote and perilous landscapes with a score led by Richard Tognetti, a poetic script by Robert Macfarlane and narration by Willem Dafoe, the film is an immersive journey through beauty, risk and awe.

Festivals and Awards

Mountain had its world premiere at the Sydney Opera House as part of the 2017 Sydney Film Festival, accompanied by a live performance from the Australian Chamber Orchestra. It went on to screen at the San Sebastián, BFI London and Busan international film festivals.

The film won three AACTA Awards: Best Cinematography in a Documentary, Best Original Score in a Documentary and Best Sound in a Documentary.
