A gripping exploration of obsession, risk and the drive to venture where no one has gone before.

In a remote corner of New Zealand’s South Island, renowned cave diver Dr Richard “Harry” Harris and his close-knit team attempt one of the most dangerous dives ever undertaken: a descent into an underwater cave system deeper than anyone has previously explored.

To reach those depths, the team plans to use hydrogen as a breathing gas, an experimental and highly volatile approach that adds another layer of risk to an already perilous expedition. As Harry prepares to confront darkness, extreme cold and the limits of human endurance, he is forced to consider the personal cost of the passion that has shaped his life.

Drawing on Harris’s own vertiginous underwater footage, Ben Dowie’s striking cinematography above ground and a score by Antony Partos, Deeper captures the tension, exhilaration and deep bonds of trust required to push beyond the known world.

Deeper was selected for SXSW and screened at Sydney Film Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival and received a special Jury mention at BANFF Mountain Film Festival.
